Kakahu Bush

Two charitable trusts manage this area and its unique features which are open to the public. Kakahu Bush is a protected area of rare fossils and balancing rocks and a place of tranquility and history. The Kakahulime kiln made of limestone and marble, was built in 1881. Tram lines from the hilltop ran to the kiln where lime was smeltered and used for buildings and agriculture. Nearby is the old wood framed Kakahu School. The land is jointly managed by the South Canterbury Conservation Trust and the Department of Conservation. The track is open. The lime kiln on Hall Road is a separate small reserve administered by Timaru District Council and protected under the Historic Places Trust. The kiln can be seen from the road, and there is a gate that provides access for close viewing.
