C Hotel Wellington - Railton Hotel - Trekkers - Cuba Street

Classical Edwardian city hotel by acclaimed architect William Gray Young. Initially the 'People's Palace,' Salvation Army Hotel, it was opened in 1908 by the Prime Minister, Mr Joseph Ward.

Earlier still, the site had been donated to the Salvation Army for a hostel for needy women, which was named Paulina Resqe, this project being the work of one Annette Paul, a major in the Salvation Army. That service was moved to Owen street, and the People's Palace went up, a money making enterprise for the Church.

Later renamed the Railton Hotel, it traded here until 1986, growing two further wings along the way. The new owners called it Trekkers Hotel but it suffered in the stock market crash in 1987 and then with earthquake concerns in 19965 and did not really recover until a rebuild in 2003.

After a short spell as Hotel Wellington, and CQ Hotel, it is now the C Hotel, associated with Q Hotel and the CQ Conference and Function Centre. Another refurb was underway in 2019.
