Edith Cavell Bridge - Upper Shotover Bridge

The first bridge was built in 1862. The Edith Cavell Bridge is made from two separate concrete parabolic arches and was only the second reinforced concrete arch bridge to be constructed in New Zealand. It was built between 1 November 1917 and 13 February 1919.

Edith Cavell (a nurse) was a World War 1 heroine. It is said the name was painted on the bridge by ann admirer, goldminer Jim Clark, who lived nearby, after the County Council rejected his idea and it stuck. The Bridge is a category 1 historic place.
