969 Galatea Road, Te Mahoe-Matahina, Whakatane
The earth dam here is New Zealand's second largest. The power station produces 300 GWh a year from two 36 Mw(e) generators. As the Rangitaiki River has high water flow production tends to be 'run-of-river' rather than on the basis of stored water. The station was commissioned in 1967, but damage to the dam in the 1987 Edgecumbe earthquake required subsequent strengthening.
Matahina is owned by Trustpower a Bay of Plenty based electricity generator, energy retailer and telco.
