Te Urewera Mainland Island

Whakatane Walks

The Te Urewera Mainland Island has been judged one of Australasia's 'top 25' ecological restoration projects.

Take the Bell Rd turnoff from SH2. At the end of Bell Rd join Matahi Valley Road. The mostly unsealed and windy road travels 30 km up the valley to the end. The Ngutuoha Nature Trail is an easy loop walk with interpretation panels taking about an hour. Te Urewera is unique in that it contains the full complement of North Island native forest birds, apart from weka.

Note: Te Urewera is no longer a national park, but a separate legal entity governed by the Te Urewera Board which comprises joint Tuhoe and Crown membership.
