Oruaiti Reserve

Wellington City Walks

The sea end of the ridge separating Seatoun and Breaker Bay provides a commanding view of the entrance to Wellington Harbour making it a strategic location.

That this was once a pa site is acknowledged by a Waka Sculpture set in the ground. Walking tracks traverse the ridge and provide access to several old observation points and gun emplacements. Oruaiti Reserve is a protected coastal ecosystem. Important native plant species are being preserved and revegetation is under way with eco-sourced plants. Interpretation panels around the reserve provide insights into the history of this interesting place. The mythical waka was designed by Charles Gordon.

The area used to be called Point Dorset, and the emplacements upon the hill are named Fort Dorset.
