7A Clyde Quay, Oriental Bay, Wellington City

Clyde Quay

Wellington City Community Halls

The Clyde Quay Wharf was originally built in 1909. In 1964 it found a new purpose when the Overseas Passenger Terminal designed by Michael Fowler was added for visiting cruise ships. However the ships became too big for the wharf.

The design of the latest development (2014 completion) refers to the passenger terminal by including the spire. The Quay overlooks the Clyde Quay Marina to the west and Oriental Bay and the RPNYC to the east. Building this complex of 76 luxury apartments, retail and office space involved major engineering works. The garages below the building are in the tidal zone.

The perimeter area is multi-use public space accessible around the entire building by foot, bike, car or boat. There is a Mojo Café in the building (Mojo-Poneke) which is also a restaurant with chef Martin Bosley as the chef.

The developer was Willis & Bond, the architect Athfield Architects and the structural engineer Adam Thornton. A major engineering role was played by the contractors L.T. McGuiness. The marine environment is tough on the building fabric so that the corporate costs are expected to be high.
