3 Rosehaugh Avenue, Northland, Wellington City
Wellington City Community Halls
New Zealand's second largest cemetery offers great historic interest and a place to walk. The cemetery was established in 1891 to replace the older, overcrowded, cemeteries in the centre of Wellington. 83,000 people are buried here. There are three Heritage Listed Buildings, The Lychgate, the Mortuary Chapel and the Crematorium and Chapel. The Crematorium Chapel in particular is worthy of notice as it contains two wonderful stained glass windows, 'Faith' and 'Hope' by noted Irish Artist Wilhelmina Geddes.
In addition to the listed buildings there is the memorial to the Tangiwai Disaster of 1953 in which 151 people lost their lives and a memorial to one of the greatest of our Prime Ministers, Peter Fraser.Aself-guided walk visits the graves of people who died in the 1909Penguin shipwreck.
Historian Barbara Mulligan offers themed tours at $15 per head which can be fascinating for anyone with an interest in Wellington history.
