Makara Walkway, Karori-Makara Beach, Wellington City
The small Warehou Pa was on the flat land on the ridge off the walking track to the right as you head west. You know you are at a pa as the earthworks are definitive. And the view also proves it had a great line of sight north, south, and across to Te Waipounamu.
The defended area is terraced with an area of 40 x 15m. It was subject to an archaeological dig in 1962 and another in 1974, which suggested the brief occupancy here took place in the 18th Century, other evidence points to the 14th Century. Ethnologist Elsdon Best was here, this was a local area to him when he was resident in Tawa.
Occasionally the locale has been termed 'Wharehou' or 'Makara' Pa.
