101A Hutt Road, Kaiwharawhara, Wellington City

Fort Buckley

This is another remnant of the fortifications made for firepower during the Russian Scare of the late 1800s. In this case the Fort was first a temporary emplacement then later became an official defence site along with others in the region.

The remains of the fortifications can be accessed from a track off Barnard Street in Wadestown and the ruins of the associated magazine are in nearby Trelissick Park.

In the right wind conditions, or in the rare absence of wind conditions, it this site is great for a picnic, as it overlooks the interisland ferry terminal and is high enough above Hutt Road so as not to be too noisy.
