56 Carroll Street, Te Kuiti-Piopio, Waitomo
Te Kuiti (pop 4500) in the King Country started life as a railway construction camp. Its railway heritage can be seen in many of the houses. The coming of the railway opened the region to European settlement. Now the centre of a sheep farming district, Te Kuiti hosts the New Zealand Shearing Championships and is the self-styled World Shearing Capital. From the information centre you can get a pamphlet for the town trail, a self-guided tour of the town. The carved Te Tokanganui-A-Noho Meeting House at the south end of the town was gifted to the local Maori people (Ngati Maniapoto) by Te Kooti, a famous Maori leader.
