36 Eketone Street, Mairoa-Te Kumi, Waitomo
A farm park easily reached on foot from the the centre of Te Kuiti.
As a working farm, the block was managed in innovative ways by Mr Brook from the 1930s onwards, for example he was an early adopter of electric fencing, and of anti-erosion techniques. One of these was to employ the Italian tradition of planting exotic trees which appear as a canopy over the valley, and farming beneath. The trees might be foreign, but the birdlife is native, and there is plenty of it.
The highest point, Motakiora, once a pa site, offers spectacular views. It's occupation, by Maniapoto people, is thought to date back to the 17th Century, and the history is interesting. Locals call the hill Ben Lomond.
The park is landscaped and used for activities like jogging, orinteering and mountainbiking. Walks range in length from 40 mins to 1.5 hours. There are barbecues, picnic tables and toilets.
