The first to be built of the sequence of hydro dams on the Waitaki River - this one, unlike its successors, was built with pick, shovel and wheelbarrow in the depression years from 1928 to 1934. This was the governments way of combating unemployment, but it meant many men lived and worked in rough and dangerous conditions.
Labour who first came to power in 1935 based its social security scheme on the experiences here of two of its MPs, the Reverend Arnold Nordmeyer and Dr D G McMillan.
The remains of the village which comprised 350 houses and many more huts, have been listed as an Historic Place.
Waitaki power station has 7 generating sets each with an output of 15MW(e)and produces 496Gwh per year.
