281 Spa Road, Tauhara, Rangatira Park, Taupo
An amazing backstory underpins the thermal resource that is now called the Grandeur Thermal Spa Resort. This property dates to the very earliest days of Taupo's tourism trade and so do some of the buildings. The most valuable of them, A 126-year-old Maori meeting house crafted by renowned mastercarver Wero and sold by Maori chief Tamamutu to the hotel’s former owner in 1886, was removed in 2011 and sold at Auction. The authenticity of the resort remains, and the accommodation is tidy and the water still warm.
There are many accounts of the original, characterful, owner Edward Lofley - here is one.
