Rotoiti Nature Recovery Project

An accessible 'Mainland Island' adjacent to Lake Rotoiti. The site was selected because it contained montane honeydew Nothofagus beech forest typical of the indigenous cover of the northern South Island of New Zealand. DOC (the Department of Conservation) control pests in the Beech Forest by trapping and possums by poisoning. There is no predator-proof fence.
The sights and sounds of birds are evidence of the success of the pest control measures. Kaka chicks, which are rare on the mainland, have survived within the area. Find out more at the DOC centre in St Arnaud.
