Abel Tasman Coast track, Awaroa Bay, Tasman
A 7 hectare sandspit separates the Awaroa Inlet from Tasman Bay. It was once in private hands complete with riparian rights. Although public beach access was allowed by the owners, when it came to be sold it was feared that new owners would not permit this. However an inspired Givelalittle campaign raised over 2 million dollars from 39 000 people throughout New Zealand and helped by a gift from a private trust and a government contribution it was bought for public use in February 2016. It is now part of the Abel Tasman National Park.
