State Highway 2, Otawhao-Mt Bruce, Tararua
Civil engineer Alfred Falkner built this unique memorial to men who served in the first World War. It was completed in 1922. Further names were added after WW II.
In 2010 the bridge was given a Category 1 listing by Heritage New Zealand.
Just to the south of the bridge, the W A Miller scenic reserve preserves a patch of native bush. There is a pleasant circular walk within the bush taking about 15 minutes.
Adele comments: It is great now that its been restored, painted. It is a lovely War Memorial to the Fallen of the area. Anyone interested in Military History of NZ should indeed visit this unique bridge, south of Eketahuna, it was part of the old road. There is a walk way coming up from Masterton side to view it. Peter Snell visited it on his trip home some months back, as one of his family is mentioned on it. Whilst in the area, visit Featherston, and view all the Military headstones from WW1, 150 soldiers died of influenza, many had served overseas, Gallipoli. France. Egypt. Featherston had a Military Camp and Hospital in WW1. similar in WW2 for the Japanese POW's.
