Parihaka Pa

After the Taranaki Wars of the 1860s, Parihaka became a centre of Maori resistance to further loss of their land. Te Whiti-0Rongamai and Tohu Kakahi promoted civil disobedience to achieve this aim. To quell the resistance the Government sacked Parihaka on November 5, 1881. Several historic buildings survive on the marae and there is a memorial there to Te Whiti.
In 2010 Parihaka was the scene for an international peace festival.
The events at Parihaka have provided inspiration for a number of New Zealand artists.
A notable book, Ask That Mountain - the Story of Parihaka by Dick Scott and published in 1975 recorded the story of the struggles and the way in which passive resistance was used.
In 2017 the Parihaka Papakainga Trust accepted a settlement of $9 million and an apology from the Crown.
The people of Parihaka gathered at Parliament in October 2019 to witness a Reconciliation Act passing into law.
