24 Matapuna Road, Horopito, Ruapehu
Traversing the last major section of the North Island Main Trunk Railway line to be completed (1908), the Old Coach Road offers a mountain biking/walking route between Hiropito and Ohakune packed with interest and scenery. Taking from 2 -4 hours to ride (there is more downhill travelling from the Horopito end), the route is a section of the Mountains to Sea trail one of the routes on the New Zealand Cycle Trail.
The Heritage interest and the technological achievements of the time are well covered by Information Boards along the route which includes a disused tunnel and a slight diversion to the Hapuawhenua Viaduct.
