North Island Main Trunk Line - Last Spike

In November 1908 the Premier, Sir Joseph Ward drove a silver spike here to signify the completion of the North Island Main Trunk Railway (NIMT). By the mid 1920s the new 'Night Limited' Express linked Auckland and Wellington in 14 hours. For many years this was New Zealand'smost important transport route. The central section between Hamilton and Palmerston North was electrified between 1980 and 1988. But with the exception of the Northern Explorer passenger train the line is now essentially a freight one.
