Turakina Beach and Koitiata

Turakina Beach, also known as Koitiata, is 8km west of the main highway and has around 100 baches and houses. The tidy foreshore area has a great playground and access to the beach. An informative information board tells about the wildlife in the area. The river comes from the north and runs parallel to a wood covered beach before turning to flow into the sea. The river mouth has at times been several kilometres to the south of its current position. Its earlier path is marked by remnant lagoons.

Turakina township on SH1 boasts a wonderful antique shop, which offers coffee and lunches. It has an enormous quantity of goods and is all beautifully presented, very much like a museum visit.
