This reserve is named after John William Reed and his son, John Taylor Reed, who were very active in the public life of Arrowtown and the wider Wakatipu District, serving on the council, sporting organisations, the RSA and other community Groups. John William Reed was elected to the Arrowtown Borough Council in January 1932 and became Deputy Mayor in 1935.He stood down during WW2, rejoined in 1943 and finally retired in 1951 having served five terms, two of which were as Deputy Mayor. John Taylor Reed became an Arrowtown Borough Councillor in 1956 aged 23. he served two terms and then retired until he stood again in 1980. He was elected for three more terms, two of which were as Deputy Mayor, until 1989 when theArrowtown Borough was amalgamated into the Queenstown Lakes District Council. Taylor the served as the first Councillor representing the Arrowtown Ward on the Queenstown Lakes District Council until he finally retired in 1998, having served a total of 24 years service.
