3700 Kawhia Road, Oparau, Otorohanga
The reserve is an 'almost pristine' remnant of a once extensive forest containing many Kauri trees. A camping/picnicking area is a short walk (20min return) . There are a number of attractive walking tracks of varying difficulty.
Impressive views, spectacular waterfalls, towering limestone bluffs, 400 year old kauri, huge kahikatea, caves, clear streams and glow worms are all present. The reserve is home to bellbirds, tui, kingfisher, kereru, falcons, and morepork. Kiwi and kokako can no longer be found and an ecological restoration strategy has been implemented.
The Hamilton Junior Naturalist Club (known as "Junats") own Te Kauri Lodge in the centre of the park and share management responsibilities with DOC.
