Terraces, trenches and storage pits can all still be seen on this important North Taranaki pa. Nearby is the site of the 1822 Battle of Motunui, fought between Taranaki and Waikato tribes, long-standing enemies. A memorial to Sir Peter Buck(Te Rangi Hiroa) takes the form of a stylised prow of a huge war canoe. In the vault beneath it are his ashes and those of his pakeha wife. The fascinating story of Sir Peter Buck tells of a half-caste of Irish and Maori heritage whose career included being a pioneering and internationally renowned anthropologist, the first Maori medical doctor, a politician, administrator, soldier, sportsperson and leader of the Maori people.
The 1822 battle involving thousands was between Te Ati Awa, Ngati Mutunga and Ngati Tama and invading Waikato tribes. Te Rauparaha and his Ngati Toa people were living here at the time and joined forces with the local tribes to defeat the northern invaders.
