Govett-Brewster Art Gallery and Len Lye Archive

The Govett-Brewster focuses on collecting work by emerging and mid-career New Zealand artists and artists from the Pacific Rim. It was already an important regional contemporary art museum but is now also home to the Len Lye archive.
Len Lye gifted his collection and archive to be housed here.

Patterson Architects designed the Len Lye Centre with a spectacular stainless steel façade. Probably New Zealand's first example of "destination architecture". It sits immediately adjacent to the existing building.
This is New Zealand’s first art museum dedicated to a single artist. In the words of Len Lye himself, ‘Great Art goes 50/50 with Great Architecture.’ No-one knows if he envisioned the fantastic 2015 Len Lye Centre when he said this, but his words have become prophetic as his collection sits tight inside the cutting edge Len Lye Centre.
