West Avon Flats

West Avon was designed by the Christchurch architect Wilford Melville Lawry (1894-1980). It dates from 1936, it's symmetry boldly and effortlessly representing the Deco style in the heart of the Victorian City. Still a trendy place to live, it was perhaps most famous when "video killed the radio star',and music videos were born in the early 1980s. New Zealand bands were quick to shoot their newfangled dancing singing short movies at some of our choicest architectural spots. The West Avon flats starred in the Dance Exponents track "Victoria" complete with beaut 1982 pastel pink coat of paint. During the Millennium this building has happily withstood the quakes that felled greater structures and has returned to an authentic Deco colour scheme of aqua and gold.
