The Free Theatre in Christchurch

The Free Theatre has the distinction of being the first activity to take occupation in the post-earthquake Arts Centre. The building it occupies was once the gymnasium for the Christchurch Boy's High School but the school left the site in 1926. After that the building had become the Academy Cinema. In the earthquake repairs removal of the swimming pool which was between the gymnasium and the main high school building has revealed a fine arcade. Free Theatre Christchurch is a producer of experimental theatre. The professional company serves as an interdisciplinary performance laboratory. Artists work together to create innovative, high quality, performance work.
