1055 Pukearuhe Road, Waiiti, New Plymouth
Missionary, John Whiteley's story gives an insight into the land issues in Taranaki in the 1860s. The memorial was sited near where he was killed. Troops and militia had erected a redoubt here in April 1865 on the site of an old pa. In 2004, following a Waitangi Treaty settlement the Crown reserve on which the monument was erected was transferred back to Ngati Tama.
Ngati Tama did not wish the memorial to remain on their land so the Methodist Church made a decision to transfer the the plaque and cross in an accessible location at the New Plymouth Methodist Centre, behind the Whiteley Memorial Church in Liardet Street.
