Lake Mangamahoe

New Plymouth Walks

Photograph the mountain reflected in the lake waters if the clouds let you, or enjoy a pleasant walk. Mountain bike riders will find tracks to reconnoitre in the pine forest. Electricity company Trust Power owns the lake and it is New Plymouth's main water supply because the lake is the headwaters for a small power scheme which was completed in 1931 but had antecedents as far back as 1904. It is called the Mangorei Power Station and is still operational. Lately a fish bypass has been added and Trust Power have committed some resources to saving longfin eels.

The forest here was used for a battle scene in the Tom Cruise film, 'The Last Samurai'.
