30 Brooklands Park Drive, Brooklands, Brooklands, New Plymouth
Built as a colonial hospitalin 1848, this Gothic building with an exposed wooden frame was shifted to Brooklands Park in 1904. The architect was Frederick Thatcher. There were only four of these hospitals built in the 1840s, and this is the only surviving one. It is owned by the Council, is the home of the Taranaki Society of the Arts and serves as their gallery. In 2017 the original shingle roof was replaced with the same cedar shingles, imported from Canada, giving the building a new lease of life and securing its' future. A suggestion of a regular kiwi steel roof was not well received, especially thanks to the Category One status of the building.
It is located in the park on Brooklands Park Drive not far from the zoo.
