1 Beresford Square, The Glen, Nelson City
**Old Central Auckland Fire Station
**By The Auckland Psychogeographer
A building in two parts, the old central Auckland Fire Station has an older section on Pitt Street (dating around 1902) that housed fire engines - and in subsequent years was used as offices for the St John ambulance services (it still has their insignia emblazoned on the walls) as well as flower merchants, and a menswear business. The Pitt street side has finely detailed windows and an upper balcony, affording a wide view across the city, as well as dramatic gates and three archways for the engines, and covered in cement stucco when it was modernised in 1926.
The Beresford Square segment (1912) was for administration and fireman accommodation and boasts a gorgeous courtyard with olive trees and climbing ivy that is bereft of a cafe or restaurant to bring it life. There is an exquisite look-out / bell tower with a copper roof that would have afforded crucial views over the central Auckland suburbs. Presently it is privately owned, with offices, and some rental accommodation - and apparently the bell tower is available to rent courtesy of a wedding planner.
Both segments are listed by Heritage NZ as category one buildings.
