236 Collingwood Street, The Brook, Nelson City
Going by the same name as a much larger mountain range in Scotland, or if you like a larger still national park in Victoria, the hills directly behind Nelson City host a network of walking and cycling trails to suit all abilities and fitness levels. These hills host a variety of vegetation, including second growth native bush, some exotic trees, clearings, and the odd pocket of original bush. Another significant advantage to the citizens of Nelson and visitors is that the various tracks are accessible from a range different suburban streets throughout the city. One backs on to the grounds of Fairfield House.
The main access is from the top of Collingwood Street in the centre of the city, though a steep zigzag climb is the price for this quick entry. On the tops, there are views to be had from most of the tracks which are named Ronaki, Mahoe, Tawa, Sugarloaf, Kahikitea, Mamaku, Kanuka, and Grampians Summit.
Though convenient and pretty, this is no a pristine ecological reserve, with the volunteers looking after it describing it as blessed with every sort of weed known in New Zealand. Nevertheless the Birdlife on Grampians group persevere with trapping rodents in order to encourage birdlife with their tagline "the Nelson Community Aiding conservation"
