21 Aldworth Road, Hunterville, Manawatu
A short easy walk of 20-30 minutes takes you through a reserve containing impressive specimens of rimu, totara and kahikatea. This rare patch of original bush next to SH1 can be attributed to Robert Cunningham Bruce, a conservationist who gifted the district several forest patches. Mr Bruce was a Scottish born gentleman who became a New Zealand Member of Parliament, and left behind a trust for conservation purposes when he died in 1917.
The main highway now bypasses the bush having been diverted from its path through it. There is a memorial to Mr Bruce, and a grand entrance with his name on it which is a bit misplaced as it is not on the way in or out, but is just there.
