43 Seaview Road, Seaview, Seaview, Lower Hutt City
This impressive factory building with a glass wall on its northern side was built with standardised steel frames fabricated in Canada. The west elevation was designed by King & Dawson. (1935-37)
No longer used for vehicle assembly it is now a building supplies store. Factories are important in the history of the Modern Movement. In particular the Peter Behrens A.E. G. High Tension Factory of 1909 "represented the culmination of his efforts to give architectural dignity to a workplace".
In 2018 the hardware store which had occupied the main hall of the factory moved out and the premises was subject for to strenuous earthquake strengthening, and intense rumours as to it's future in the film industry, with large players on the scene the supposed new owners. The other half of the building is home to a furniture design and manufacturing firm.
