Naenae is home to a pool of epic proportions. When it was opened in 1956, it was first deck level pool in the Southern Hemisphere, and there was a hint that it might be a drawcard for potential Empire Games. As it turned out it was not until 1974, and in Christchurch, that New Zealand hosted the Commonwealth Games complete with their own new pool. Naenae, Epuni and Taita, having paid a rates levy for the new facility, embraced it, soon adding learners and tiny tots pools.
A huge makeover in 1987 included the addition of the roof and the zoomtube waterslide. The competetive squads who train here have produced some of New Zealand's fastest swimmers.
Visitors to the pool will now find a sophisticated complex including fitness facilities, seminar rooms, aqua jogging and aquarobics as well as learn to swim and other kids programmes. Holiday programmes feature kayaking, snorkelling and water safety. The main pool is split into two 25m pools, the 110m enclosed waterslide called the Zoomtube and the DropZone – a twin racer slide with a vertical drop of 5 metres.
