Dowse Art Museum

Lower Hutt City's Art Museum was revamped in 2006 by Athfield Architects with new display spaces. The original building was designed by Ronald Muston of Structon Group Architects.
"The NewDowse seeks to showcase the work of creative people across a range of disciplines". The Gallery has a "DIY" centre in the foyer for younger children as well as creative, hands-on school programmes. There is a popular cafe.
A nationally significant Pataka (Maori store house)Nuku Tewhatewha is on permanent display. The form of raised rectangular Pataka structures with carved barge boards is believed to be the inspiration for the well-known Maori meeting houses (whare whakairo) which were built from the time of European settlement.

The Dowse houses the collection of the Blumhardt Foundation a charitable trust dedicated to supporting contemporary craft/object art.

A number of art works now grace the area outside the building. Its Cafe Reka is very popular for weekend brunch.
