To get to the Catchpole Valley 12 km south of Wainuiomatayou'll need to travel independently as there is no convenient bus.
Walk on a gentle track through the forest, swim in the river and picnic at this park south of Lower Hutt about a 45 minute drive from Wellington. There is a DOC visitor centre where you can get background information on the park's history and its geology, flora and fauna. Barbecues (coin operated) and picnic tables can be found on the river flats. There is also a DOC campsite and in the logged area in the south of the valley there are mountain bike trails.
The popular Orongorongo Track starts at the east side of the carpark providing access to a number of short and longer walks. One well graded track leads to the Orongoronga River in the next valley. After about two hours' walk a picnic spot can be found near the bridge over the Turere Stream on the side of the Orongoronga River. Return the same way
