Korohiwa Bay and Wahine Memorial

One of three memorials to the 51 lives lost in the sinking of the Ferry TEV Wahine in a storm on 10 April 1968. The Union Steam Ship Company vessel, the Wahine, having sailed from Lyttelton, was entering the Wellington harbour in a storm when tragedy struck. It was grounded on Barrett Reef near Seatoun on the South Coast. Some of the passengers who went overboard found themselves thrown toward the Eastern side of the harbour, where this memorial is situated. The Eastbourne community responded with rescue dinghies and blankets, shelter and food.
This memorial is at Korohiwa Bay, a stretch of exposed coastline separating Eastbourne village and the rural Pencarrow Coast. It features marine and coastal stylised landscaping and the foremast from the doomed ship and is dedicated to those who lost their lives, those who were saved and the rescuers.

Also here are the "Bus Barns", where many of Wellington's busses are cared for and overnighted, a track that connects with 'Butterfly Creek' an old farmhouse, and a new bike shed at 'Burdan's Gate.' Here begins the Pencarrow Coast Road ride.
