Civic Theatre - The Otaki Players

Kapiti Coast Community Halls

This Art Deco Theatre has been home to the Otaki Players since 1991. Each year the Players endeavour to perform three productions, both theatre and musicals.

The Otaki Players Society Theatre, was built in 1938 after the original theatre, known as Brights, was burnt down in a fire in 1935. Fredrick and Arthur Bright built the theatre in 1913, creating what was then one of the largest theatres between Palmerston North and Wellington.

After another fire in 1935, the Borough Council rebuilt a new theatre on the Main Street site in 1938, which is the Civic Theatre today. The theatre ran mainly as a picture theatre, occasionally hosting other events such as concerts during the war years. The Civic Theatre was host to performances by the world-famous opera singer, Inia Te Wiata, who was raised in Otaki
