Hurunui Walks

Weka Pass is a gorge located in the northern Canterbury region of the South Island. SH7 through the gorge connects the towns of Waipara and Waikari. The Waipara River cut the Weka Pass by wearing down the soft limestone and mudstone in the area. To the west of the pass is the Weka Pass Historic Reserve in which you can take a 40-minute walk to a large overhang shelter that features examples of early Maori rock art. Scientific investigation of the rock drawings were first made in 1876 by Julius Haast, director of the Canterbury Museum. There are two entry points to the walkway - The Star and Garter Hotel on S H 7 (parking available at hotel), or from Waikari township.
