Mangapapa Hotel

Hastings Gardens

The very foundations of the Hawkes Bay economy were once centred here, at the gracious and generous former home of Sir James and Lady Wattie, the first generation of the Wattie family who preserved the Bays produce by canning and bottling, and exported it to the world.
Watties remains a top New Zealand food brand, but the family ownership is over. The Wattie family home also lives on in a new guise, as the Mangapapa Luxury Hotel. With twelve guest suites it is certainly of the size suited to hospitality, and the add-ons are impressive too. The house itself dates to 1885, and all the renovations and decoration has been in keeping with the era.

Mangapapa's tagline is Luxury, Seclusion, Elegance & Romance, and they achieve this amongst the genuine history of the home. It actually was first built for the owner of the local freezing works, whose wife was neice of William Wordsworth. The Watties took over in 1946, the farm producing fruit and vegetables for canning, and they stayed on until Sir James' death in 1974, his son then adding the swimming pool and tennis court, while lady Wattie lived in a bungalow on the grounds.

Since the 1990s, Mangapapa has bee operating as luxury accommodation, and now has gym and spa facilities.
