Gore

The inland town of Gore (population 12,000) is Southland's second largest. Its Information Centre is housed in the Hokonui Heritage Centre along with the Gore Historical Museum and the Hokonui Moonshine Museum. The Moonshine Museum celebrates "Hokonui" - the unique illicit whisky once produced in stills hidden in the bush. Another Heritage attraction is the Hokonui Pioneer Village and Vintage Car Club Motor Museum on the north side of town at Pioneer Park. Some visitors may like to see the former Creamoata Factory, a huge symbol of bygone manufacturing days.

Gore is a New Zealand centre for Country and Western music hosting the New Zealand Gold Guitars each June. The venue for the awards is the Gore Town and Country Club Stadium. Brown trout in the Mataura River and its tributaries lure many anglers in the spring and early summer.
