Cable Bay

Cable Bay is a picturesque small indentation in Doubtless Bay, notable for its unusual pinkish sand, it is fronted by large, mature pohutukawa trees which spill out onto the sand.

Plenty of fantastic opportunities for New Zealand Beachfront holidays as they were and still ought to be. Rent a Bach or something more grand and simply lie on the sand. A bit of surf keeps the water babies happy at one end of the beach while on a good day it is safe swimming for all.

The beach itself is around three kilometres long and one New Zealand’s most beautiful. Small rocky outcrops are ideal for fishing and rockpool exploration. There are toilets, car-parking, a store and motels. Swimming is safe except for a slight undertow in bad weather.

Cable Bay is so-named because from 1902 to 1912 a cable operated from here to a terminus near Brisbane. At the time the 3,458-nautical-mile cable was the longest in the world. Coopers Beach Coopers Beach is another feature of Doubtless Bay, at its southern end, and is just 1-km from Mangonui.

Not to be confused with Cable Bay on Urupukapuka Island in the Bay of Islands or the one in Nelson, or the vineyard at Waiheke.
