The main township in the Catlins services farming, forestry and, increasingly, tourism.

Owaka, meaning ‘place of canoes’ refers to a time when Maori came here to build their canoes from the mighty totara trees.

A small museum has displays of local history.

Quilters will be surprised to find a flourishing fabric and patchwork shop here.
