Owaka Highway, Ahuriri Flat, Clutha
A short walk leads to what was the southern most railway tunnel in New Zealand. Completed in 1893 it is 246 metres long and was hand-built. The bricks were manufactured nearby. The walk ends at the far end of the tunnel so a torch can be helpful.
Tanya comments: We walked the length of this tunnel March 08.
WITHOUT a torch, what an experience.
A wee bit scary not able to see anything but you could almost hear a train.
Any one have any photos of this tunnel?
I would love one.
