6 Taylors Mistake Bay, Sumner, Sumner, Christchurch City
This Coastline walk can take up to two hours.
From Taylors Mistake car park take the track in front of the quaint squatters’ cottages. At the end of the beach there is a stile. The track proper starts here, An invigorating walk for the family, with wonderful sea and cliff views. Spotted shags and other sea birds can easily be seen and there’s a protected area for the much more elusive white-flippered penguin.
There are beautiful views of Pegasus Bay, New Brighton Beach and the Kaikoura Mountains. The track is good but winds above high cliffs. There are some rocky patches underfoot. Boardwalks, sometimes with steps, take you safely over the more difficult parts but children should be kept safe. At the end, the track divides above more picturesque squatter’s holiday houses and leads you down to Boulder Bay or up to the Summit Road and Godley Head. The Bay is rocky and stony.
Although it’s narrow and feels confined, this adds to the sensation of being in a time warp, because you can sit on painted benches in front of Heath Robinson houses and watch the breaking waves, the circling sea birds and, if you’re lucky, see a playful seal journey by. There’s an old long-drop toilet set in the trees as you reach beach level. More modern toilets are located above the settlement, up the track to the top at Godley Head carpark.
Godley Head is worth a visit for the views and a trip down to the tunnel and searchlight emplacements built during World War 2. Add another hour if you include this section.
