71 Colombo Street, Somerfield, Somerfield, Christchurch City
The Malthouse, 1867, is one of the earliest surviving stone buildings in Christchurch, one of few to survive the Canterbury Earthquakes, perhaps due to seismic strengthening in 2003. Having been part of the Canterbury brewing industry until the 1950s, and then serving a seed company, the building was taken over by a Trust and has been home to the Canterbury Children's Theatre for many decades, and the adjoining business The Malthouse Costume Hire. Though all the brewing equipment has long since left the building, the Trust has never been able to quite raise the funds for proposed internal renovations but it continues to serve their purposes.
They occasionally have an open day.
