St Bathans and the Blue Lake

Central Otago Walks

The historic goldmining town of St Bathans (1863) is famous fo r its man-made blue lake and other geographic features which provide inspiration to travelling photographers and artists.
The lake was formed out of a hill named ‘Kildare hill,’ which after extensive mining formed a lake shape and minerals from the tailings gave it a luminous blue which remains to this day.
It takes 30-90 minutes to walk the 2km track around the blue lake and there are other hiking activities in the area.
The village forms part of the Otago Rail Trail, tourists stay in the historic Vulcan Hotel or Constables cottage and Jail all of which have been restored to an excellent standard. A DoC campsite caters for campers. The town hall which is one of New Zealand’s few mud brick halls has also been restored at community expense and effort.
