Clyde Heritage Walk

Central Otago Walks

A short walk along the town’s main street from the Dam end takes you past historic buildings.

Hartley Arms Hotel - 1869 Now a private house, this building is thought to be the first single storey stone hotel. Hartley Homestead is a later homestead, and is not on the main street,

Town Hall - Masonic Lodge - 1868-69 This building, with its Corinthian columns and unusual windows, was to be a Masonic Hall and Temple. However, when the masons ran out of money, it became the Town Hall. An Athenaeum was added in 1874.

Dunstan House - 1900 Cobb and Co coaches brought weary travellers to this early hotel made of local stone. It has been restored recently and again provides accommodation and also a restaurant.

Dunstan Hotel - 1903 A saloon opened on this site as early as 1862. It's original name was the Commercial Hotel, but it gained the name Dunstan Hotel along with the licence in 1937. The present hotel replaced a wooden building which was destroyed by fire.

Oliver’s Lodge and Stables Benjamin Naylor came to The Dunstan in 1862. He opened a general store for the miners, and as he grew prosperous he bought more land for businesses and built a large house. The house was restored and opened as a restaurant in 1977. Turn right off the main street into Matau Street and then left into Blyth Street.

You will pass:

St Michael’s Church - 1877 Of traditional English design, this stone church replaced an earlier wooden church.

Post Office - A bar and cafe attract people to the fine stone building which once housed the Post Office.

Dunstan Courthouse Museum - 1864 Strong winds destroyed Clyde’s first courthouse. The townspeople rebuilt in stone and included offices for the Commissioner of the Goldfields and the Mayor. Some years after the courts closed the building was converted to a museum. Goldfield relics and the court’s dock, leg irons and handcuffs are reminders of the town’s colourful past.

Turn left into Fraser Street.

St Dunstan’s Church - 1906 The Roman Catholic Church is of a colonial Gothic style.

St Mungo’s Presbyterian Union Church - 1894 The original wooden building was roughcast in the 1950s.
