TheRail Trail follows the former Otago Central railway line from Clyde to Middlemarch. Ride it, walk it, take one dayout on it, or several. We recommend mountain biking, but however much time you spend walking, running, riding your mountain bike, or riding a horse over all or part of the trail, you are in for an experience unique in New Zealand.
• 150 kilometres divided into easily accessed sections
• Track surface similar to a gravel road; some parts clinker (more difficult riding); other easier parts are finer, consolidated gravel
• Travel at your own speed and fitness level - no really daunting hills!
• Open all year
• Prepare for temperatures as high as 40°C in summer and -10°C in winter. There’s no shelter, so start early morning or early evening at
height of summer.
• Accommodation is available in townships en route
• Transport services link with townships to return you (and bike) to main centres
• You can hire a mountain bike in Dunedin or Alexandra
• Link with the Taieri Gorge Tourist Train
